A long-vacant storefront downtown is coming back to life. Owner Dale Pruitt spent the winter renovating the old hardware building and opened Second Rise Bakery earlier this month to steady morning crowds.
Pruitt, who left a corporate accounting job to pursue baking, says the response has surprised him. "I figured I'd sell a few loaves. Instead people are lining up before we unlock the door," he said. The shop offers rotating specials, including a rye that sells out most days by nine.
Second Rise is open Tuesday through Saturday and sources flour from a mill two counties over.
